Iran’s top diplomat is urging Biden to return to the nuclear agreement

Iran’s foreign minister urged the U.S. to move quickly to return to the 2015 nuclear agreement, adding that legislation passed by parliament requires the government to tighten its nuclear status unless US sanctions are relaxed by February 21. “Time is running out for the Americans, both because of the parliament bill and the election atmosphere that will follow the Iranian New Year,” Zarif said in an interview.

If Tehran returned to full compliance with the deal, Biden said Washington would follow suit and use that as a springboard to a wider agreement that could limit the production of missiles and regional activities by Iran.

Tehran has demanded that, before resuming nuclear enforcement, Washington relax sanctions, and ruled out talks on broader security issues.

On Monday, by suggesting that the measures could be synchronized by a top European Union official, Zarif suggested a way of resolving the impasse over which side moves first. Asked about the plan, US State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters on Tuesday that if Iran resumes full compliance with the deal, the US is prepared to walk the road of diplomacy.
